Should I speak at my loved one's funeral service?

Should family and/or friends speak at a funeral service? I get asked this question quite a lot. The simple answer is "no-one should feel under pressure to do this" and I will tell you why....

Many people are hesitant when it comes to public speaking and this is amplified when speaking at a funeral or memorial service.

It is a nice way to honour a loved one or friend by delivering a eulogy or sharing memories, but it is not something that anyone should feel obliged to do. It is a very big ask.

As a celebrant I often get asked to read a eulogy on someone else's behalf and when doing so, the person who has written of course receives acknowledgement. And everyone understands.

This may be an option for you if you need to plan a service for a loved one or friend.
